Joshua Nussbaum, known professionally as “Mussar”, is a sound designer, film composer, audio engineer, music producer, and educator. Born in Maryland and currently residing in Texas, Joshua’s journey has taken him from across the United States and from coast to coast. He graduated in 2018 from the Academy of Art University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Film Scoring & Composition, collaborating across disciplines with other students working in film, animation, video games, and a wide array of music genres including pop, hip hop, and dance.
During his senior year, Joshua worked as a sound designer and composer on a Vietnamese 48 Hour Film Festival submission, which received nominations for best entry and best sound. While finishing up his degree, Joshua fell in love with education - assisting in the development of the Academy of Art’s first Ableton Live course, and working with the educational platform Upsound as a featured mentor. This passion followed through with him to his life in Los Angeles, where he continued to teach privately and began a new public educational persona on both Twitch and YouTube.
Outside of teaching, Joshua has worked with clients across the spectrum of industry - such as autonomous driving startup LUMINAR and the entertainment consultancy Brand Enchanting. He actively participates in Game Jams, and works as a beta tester for various companies such as Izotope, KiloHearts, and Yum Audio. As Mussar, he’s released sample packs through the Splice distribution platform, and has released music like 2021’s “Ricoh Act” EP.

Born in Maryland in 1988, Joshua found himself enraptured with music from a young age – yet took a winding journey in opposite directions for most of his life. Eventually, Joshua gave in to his passions and moved from his quiet life in Tampa, Florida to pursue an education in San Francisco. In 2018, Joshua graduated from the Academy of Art University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Film Scoring & Composition, which brought him to where he now lives in Los Angeles to pursue a career.
As a musician, Joshua has worked on scores for video games, animations, and short films – including a submission for a Vietnamese 48 hour film festival that was nominated for best entry and best sound. He has released dance music records as Mussar – both originals, on labels such as Emulsify and Bong Killa Records, and remixes for artists such as Jesse Slayter & G-Buck. He has DJed at clubs in Tampa and San Francisco, and produced/engineered for local San Francisco rappers.
As an educator, Joshua has been teaching both privately and publicly for nearly 3 years – A former Upsound mentor and Pyramind expert, Joshua has hosted masterclasses and currently hosts a daily educational livestream on Twitch.tv. He has received certifications in Ableton and Pro Tools, and runs an educational podcast known as “The Mussar Method”, available on most podcasting platforms.
